Nicholas Isler (Izler or Izlar)
Nicholas Isler
The earliest records of Isler ancestors
is Nicholas Isler b. 1661 in Southwest Germany or Switzerland. To
escape the ravages of war Nicholas and some 15,000 others responded in
1709 to Queen Anne's invitation to come to England to be settled in the
British Empire. They traveled down the Rhine river to Rotterdam,
and from there to England in ships provided by the English. Nicholas,
at age 48, embarked from Holland abt. 5 Jun 1709 with his wife; sons:
Christian - age 15, Frederick - 8, John - 6; and two unnamed daughters.
His wife's name was missing from the third list of Palatines taken later
that month at St. Catherine's outside of London. She possibly died
on passage from Germany to ENG. His son John and both daughters apparently
never arrived in America. In 1709 Christopher Von Graffenreid of
Bern, Switzerland was in London making arrangements to settle some Swiss
in America. He was permitted to settle his group in the area of Bath
Co., NC (now Craven Co.) and Jones Co. Among those he picked were
Nicholas Isler and his two eldest sons, Christian and Frederick.
Von Graffenreid's Swiss and Palatines sailed
to America from England in early 1710. The colonists landed at Jamestown,
VA., to avoid the pirates lurking behind the outer banks of North Carolina.
From Jamestown they traveled by land, river and the sound to the New Bern
site. Less than half survived the overseas trip. An Indian war in
1711 took further lives." See: List of Germans who came to England
from the Palatine in 1709 with Baron de Graffenreid’s Colony of About 1500
Swiss and 650 Palatines. A son John Isler and two daughters stayed
in England. John came over later but daughters were not heard from
again. Father of Frederick Isler below.

John B. Gilliard (Isler), Sr.Son of Frederick
Isler 6th Great-Grandfather and Sarah Gilliard 6th Great-Grandmother.
By an act of the NC General Assembly in 1777, and after the British Governor
was no longer in control, his name was changed from John Gilliard
to John B. Isler, Sr. John's mother (Sarah Gilliard) was most likely
the daughter of Samuel Gilliard, a substantial land owner and close friend
of Frederick. It is assumed that Frederick later married John's mother
and may have had other children. Master John Isler appears in 1820

and that she may be taken care of while she lives. The proceeds of
the property, money, notes, etc., if there should be anything over it,
it is to be equally divided among my daughters, and if there is not
enough property to cover all that I have portioned off then curtail the
different shares so that the mother shall be
cared for, and if there is anything after
her death, my desire is that it shall be equally divided among the living
children and if there should be any collection of old papers, the same
is to be equally divided among all the children. I also give and
bequeath to my son, Bentley Outlaw, Jr., in the northeast half of land
